Lau Islands Resorts
The Lau Group of islands has few resorts. There is an exclusive 5-star private resort on Kaimbu with only three bures on 880 acres. Apart from that there are a couple of guest houses on Lakeba (southern Lau) and Vanua Balavu (northern Lau). The region is pristine, remote and beautiful. There are two distinct regions - the northern Lau (close to Taveuni) are volcanic in origin and the southern Lau are lower-lying islands of calciferous formation. The islands of the Lau group are scattered over a vast expanse of the South Pacific, with some islands closer to Tonga than to the main island of Fiji. The islands include Vanuabalavu, Ono-I-Lau, Moala and Lakeba.
Access is quite difficult for tourists as it is not a tourism resort area. Air Fiji used to have a local domestic service to Vanua Balavu but this has been discontinued. Only access is by cargo boats.
Attractions of staying in the Lau group
- Its remoteness and lack of tourism infrastructure primarily attracts hardy travellers willing to journey by boat and stay where accommodation can be found.
- The natural beauty of the Lau group, and the lack of tourism is a big attraction to those travellers who make the journey.
