Fiji Lifestyle in the modern era

The Fijian lifestyle changed little in thousands of years of habitation of the Fiji Islands. In the past 100 years, especially the past 20 or so, the lifestyle has changed. However, no matter the 21st century trends and influences of the western world, the elements of Fiji culture continue to survive.

Modern Fiji

The development first of the sugar industry and then the tourism industry brought economic development to the gentle Pacific islands of Fiji. Providing employment and greater prosperity to the people of Fiji, as well as increased educational opportunities, these developments have brought changes to the Fiji lifestyle. At village level in lesser populated areas, employment benefits have allowed for better schools and facilities. In the cities, however, one sees more dramatic lifestyle changes. Trendy hairstyles, modern fashions, Italian coffee shops, and a wider variety of restaurants and shopping facilities are to be seen in Suva. Mobile phones are seen in common use, and imported cars act as status symbols. In spite of modern developments, however, the typically friendly smiles and relaxed way of life is not lost. ' Fiji Time ' is alive and well in a society that finds rushing an odd pursuit. Drive through any village along the main roads and you will be greeted by waves and smiles and the ubiquitous "Bula!"
